Can your phone measure swing speed without sensors or a watch?

Quick answer: Yes, with a clear boundary. The camera measures your body — it tracks your hands frame by frame and estimates their speed (always labeled "est.") — but it cannot measure clubhead speed, ball speed, spin or face angle at impact. That takes radar or a sensor, like a TrackMan. Plenty for tempo and sequencing; not for a fitting.

Your phone's camera can tell you something real about your swing speed: your hand speed, measured by tracking your hands frame by frame. What it cannot tell you — and anyone claiming otherwise should explain how — is clubhead speed at impact, ball speed, spin, or face angle. That half belongs to radar and sensors.

What a camera actually measures

A video is a sequence of photos with known timing: at 120 fps, each frame is 8.3 milliseconds. Measuring time from video isn't a new trick — it's exactly how John Novosel discovered the 3:1 ratio in Tour Tempo: counting frames of TV broadcasts of the best players in the world. From video you reliably get:

Speed falls out of that path: distance the wrist travels between frames ÷ time between frames. The honest caveat is scale: a camera sees pixels, not feet. Converting requires a ruler inside the image — and the most reliable one is you. Birdia, for instance, uses your declared height as the scale reference, which is why its hand speed always carries the "(est.)" label: it's an estimate with declared assumptions, not a radar measurement.

What a camera can NOT measure (and why)

What about watches and club/wrist sensors? They measure acceleration directly with an inertial sensor — a different technology with a different boundary: they capture the motion of the point they're mounted on and estimate the rest from it. No consumer device measures everything; the right question for any product is always the same: what do you measure directly, and what do you estimate?

What each number is actually for

An honest app tells you which of its numbers is a measurement and which is an estimate. It's the best filter for choosing a tool — and the reason everything in Birdia that isn't a direct measurement carries "(est.)" next to it.

Is the hand speed from a camera app reliable?

As an estimate with declared assumptions, yes: the frame-by-frame path is real and the conversion uses your height as scale. Use it to compare your own sessions (am I trending up or down?), not to compare against radar numbers — different methodologies.

Can I get my clubhead speed from a phone?

Not from a phone camera: the clubhead moves too far between frames and smears in the image. For real clubhead speed you need radar (TrackMan and the like) or a club-mounted sensor. Be skeptical of any app promising "measured" clubhead speed from camera alone.

How many fps do I need to record my swing for tempo?

At 60 fps you time the phases to ±17 ms, at 120 fps to ±8. Novosel derived the 3:1 from 24-30 fps TV footage, so any modern phone is more than enough for tempo — the camera's limit isn't tempo, it's the club and the ball.
