Can AI Analyze My Swing With Just My Phone Camera?
What a camera sees and what it doesn't
Your phone camera captures images; the AI interprets them. With computer vision it can estimate the position of your joints frame by frame and, from there, work out some genuinely useful swing details: the plane, your posture at address, shoulder and hip turn, the position at the top, and tempo. All of that is geometry and timing, and a camera captures both well.
What a camera can't measure is what happens to the ball after impact. Ball speed, spin, launch angle, or the exact point on the face where you make contact are numbers that, according to TrackMan and its ball flight laws, require a radar or an impact sensor. Confusing the two is the most common mistake.
What AI can actually analyze from video
The swing has structure, and that structure is visible. Ben Hogan described the swing in terms of specific planes and angles; David Leadbetter broke it down into sequential positions. A camera with AI fits that teaching approach perfectly because it works on exactly the same thing: where your body is at each moment.
One of the most valuable pieces of data that does come out of video is tempo. John Novosel showed in Tour Tempo that good players share an approximate 3:1 ratio between backswing and downswing. That's pure timing between frames, and a camera measures it without any trouble.

Adam Young stresses in The Practice Manual that improving demands good information and practice with intent. For most amateur golfers, the biggest room for improvement is in mechanics and tempo, not decimal points of spin, and there a camera is more than enough to start working effectively.

Do I need a special camera or is my phone enough?
Your phone is enough. The AI works on standard video; what matters is filming face-on or down-the-line, with the whole player in frame, good light, and a steady phone. A camera with more frames per second improves tempo accuracy, but it isn't essential to get started.
Is it as reliable as an in-person lesson with a pro?
They're complementary. AI is objective, available, and repeatable, ideal for checking positions and tempo between lessons. But a pro brings context, hands-on feel, and judgment that no video can replace. The PGA Teaching Manual treats teaching as an integral process; AI is a tool within that process, not a replacement.
Can the camera tell me why I slice?
Partly. The camera can show you swing factors that often cause a slice, like an open face at impact or an out-to-in path visible in the video. But the exact face-to-path relationship that defines ball flight, according to TrackMan, is confirmed with radar. The camera points you toward the mechanical cause; the radar quantifies it.
