What the 3:1 tempo actually is
John Novosel timed tour swings frame by frame and found a pattern that repeated across players with completely different styles: roughly 3 units of time going back for every 1 unit coming down. Fast swingers and slow swingers shared the ratio, not the absolute speed.
Why it matters more than "speed"
- A backswing that is proportionally too quick leaves no time to complete the turn → the sequence breaks down.
- A downswing that is proportionally slow usually means deceleration → loss of distance and contact.
- A stable ratio is what makes the swing repeatable under pressure — which is what actually lowers your handicap.
How to measure your tempo (without buying anything)
You need two moments: when the takeaway actually starts and when impact happens, plus the moment at the top. You can do it by hand with slow-motion video, but it is tedious.

As a rough guide by handicap (the one Birdia's coach uses): low-handicap players tend to sit around 2.8-3.0:1; mid handicaps around 2.5-2.9:1. If you are consistently outside your band, the fix is almost never "swing slower" — it is cleaning up the transition.

Frequently asked questions
Does 3:1 tempo mean a slow swing?
No. It means proportion: a very fast swing with a 0.75 s backswing and a 0.25 s downswing is exactly 3:1. The ratio is what is repeatable; the speed is up to each player.
Is putting tempo also 3:1?
No: on the greens the typical tour ratio is different (roughly 2:1 according to the Tour Tempo studies). Do not carry the full-swing number over to your putting stroke.
