What Does a Sensorless Swing App Actually Measure (and What Can It Never Measure)?

Quick answer: A sensorless app measures everything the camera can see: body positions, angles, swing planes, tempo, and movement sequence. What it can't measure accurately is what only radar detects: ball speed, spin, true angle of attack, and face/path at impact. These are two completely different worlds of data.

What a camera sees: your body in motion

A phone camera captures frames. From there, computer vision reconstructs your body positions throughout the swing: shoulders, hips, arms, ball position at address, the backswing plane. With that, you can measure quite a lot, and measure it well:

All of this is kinematics: how your body moves. And this is exactly where a well-built app delivers real value, because most faults start in the body's movement, not in the ball.

What it CAN'T measure without radar

Here we have to be honest. TrackMan's ball flight laws describe how face angle and path direction at impact determine where and how the ball flies. Measuring that accurately requires a Doppler radar or a high-speed sensor. A phone camera simply cannot reliably give you:

Impact lasts less than half a millisecond. At 30 or 60 frames per second, the camera just doesn't have the temporal resolution to capture it. Any app that promises you exact spin from a phone alone is selling you an estimate, not a measurement.

Far from it—for what it's designed to do: analyze your movement. Tempo, sequence, posture, and plane are all measurable with a camera and explain the cause of most faults. What you shouldn't expect is for it to replace a radar for spin or ball speed. They're complementary tools, not rivals.

Can I trust the swing speed my phone gives me?

With caution. A camera can estimate speeds from frame-to-frame movement, but it's an approximation, not the precise measurement a Doppler radar delivers. Use it to spot relative trends (am I faster today than yesterday?), not as an absolute number to base fitting or distance decisions on.

What improves faster from a camera app: full swing or short game?

It depends on what you need to see. The camera excels at capturing the full-swing motion (tempo, sequence, plane). In the short game it also helps with positions and rhythm, but factors like wedge spin or green reaction still can't be measured without sensors. Prioritize based on where you're losing the most strokes.
