Golf apps with your phone camera or club sensors (Arccos, Shot Scope)? Which is better?
Two different questions, two different tools
Before you choose, get clear on what you actually want to know. "How many greens am I hitting off the tee?" is a very different question from "why am I hitting a slice?".
Club sensors (Arccos, Shot Scope): a chip in the grip or a GPS unit detects every shot and geotags it. They give you performance stats: real carry distances per club, dispersion, greens in regulation, putts per round. Their turf is course management and statistical diagnosis, not the swing itself.
Camera apps: they record your swing and estimate body and club positions, plane, sequence and tempo. Their turf is the how: what your body does between address and impact.
A sensor tells you that you miss nine fairways to the right. A camera starts to explain why. They're complementary, not rivals.
What each one really measures (and what it doesn't)
This is where you have to be honest. A Doppler radar like TrackMan directly measures the ball and the club at impact: ball speed, angle of attack, spin, face and path using the ball flight laws. Neither a wrist/grip sensor nor a phone camera measures that with anywhere near that accuracy.
- Club sensors measure result and position (where it landed, how far it rolled out), not the mechanics of the strike. They don't know if you left the face open or came over the top; they infer your game from the outcome.
- Camera apps measure approximate kinematics: joint and club angles estimated from 2D. They're excellent for spotting plane, overswing or sequence issues, but they don't calculate real spin or face-to-path numbers.
Adam Young stresses that improvement happens when you understand the relationship between what you do and the result it produces. No single tool closes that loop on its own: the sensor gives you the result, the camera gives you the likely cause.
How to combine them without overspending
A sensible route: use an on-course sensor to find out where you're truly leaking shots (a lot of amateurs think it's the driver when it's actually the short game), and use a camera app to work on the technique behind that miss. Frequently asked questions
Can a camera app replace a TrackMan radar?
Not for ball data. A radar measures spin, ball speed and face-to-path with an accuracy a 2D camera can't touch. The camera shines on the visual side —plane, positions, tempo, sequence— and it's far more affordable. For most amateurs, simply seeing the swing already explains 80% of their misses.
Is a sensor like Arccos worth it if I already film my swing?
Yes, because they answer different questions. The sensor tells you objectively where you lose strokes on the course (drives, approach, putts), something swing video can't see. If your question is "what should I practice?", the sensor gives you the answer; if it's "how do I fix it?", the camera does.
Is the data from a phone camera reliable?
It's useful as long as you understand it's estimated. The angles and plane derived from 2D have a margin of error and depend on how you frame the shot. They work really well for comparing your swing against yourself over time and catching big flaws, but don't treat them as lab-grade measurements.
