What Does "Sway" Mean in the Golf Swing and How Do I Spot It?
What sway is and why it matters
Golf is rotation. In the backswing your pelvis and torso should turn around a relatively stable axis, not slide sideways. Sway is exactly that: the trail hip shifts laterally outward on the way back, pulling your body out of its starting position.
The problem is that if you drift back during the takeaway and backswing, you have to "find" the ball again on the way down. That forces you to time an extra move, and it explains a big share of fat shots, thin shots, and lost compression.
TPI identifies sway as one of its most common "12 swing characteristics," and typically links it to mobility limitations or poor hip disassociation. Dr. Young-Hoo Kwon's biomechanics work also stresses that energy is generated by rotating around an axis, not by uncontrolled lateral translation.
Sway is not the same as loading weight
Be careful: loading weight into your trail foot is not sway. You can shift pressure onto the trail side while keeping the hip inside its original position and rotating. Sway shows up when that weight drags the entire hip out past your body.
Hogan described a hip turn inside a contained space in Five Lessons, not a lateral sway. Leadbetter, in The Golf Swing, likewise insists on turning within a stable base rather than sliding.
How to spot it at home
The most reliable method is to film yourself face-on and draw a vertical line at the outside edge of your trail hip at address:
- If your hip has crossed the line outward by the time you reach the top → you're swaying.
- If the hip turns and stays inside the line → you're rotating well.
Another simple test: place a chair or a club stuck in the ground right against your trail hip. If you bump into it going back, you're shifting.
Birdia breaks down your swing video by phases (takeaway, backswing, downswing and finish) right on your phone, so it can pinpoint when in the backswing the lateral shift starts and compare it across swings to see if you're fixing it. That's far more objective than eyeballing the video.
If trying to turn without swaying causes real pain or a genuine hip block, don't force it: that may be a mobility limitation and it's worth having a physio assess it.

Frequently asked questions
Is sway always bad?
A small lateral shift isn't necessarily fatal, but the more you move off your axis, the harder it is to return to the ball repeatably. Most golfers improve their contact by reducing sway and prioritizing rotation around a stable center.
How do I tell sway apart from a good hip turn?
Use the vertical line at the edge of your trail hip when filming face-on. In a good turn the hip rotates and stays inside that line; in a sway the hip crosses the line outward. The feel is "turn" versus "slide."
Can I fix sway with video alone?
Yes, face-on video is your best ally, and tools like Birdia flag exactly when the shift starts, phase by phase. Combine it with physical-barrier drills (a chair or club against your hip) so your body learns the limit of the move.
