A 2D analysis works from a single camera: it sees your swing projected onto a plane. With a down-the-line view and a face-on view, you can judge swing plane, ball position, posture, tempo, and balance at the finish. That's what any phone camera does, and it's far more than most people think.
A 3D analysis uses multiple cameras or inertial sensors to reconstruct your body in space. That's where you can actually separate how much the hips rotate relative to the torso, the angular velocity of each segment, and the exact order of the sequence. The traps of 2D (and how to avoid them)
2D has a physical limit: it only sees one plane, so it can fool you about what's happening in depth. A classic example is swing plane: from down-the-line, the arm can look flatter or steeper than it really is depending on where you place the camera. Practical rules to keep 2D reliable:
- Camera at hand height (down-the-line) or sternum height (face-on).
- Perpendicular to the target line and always at the same distance.
- Good light and 120 fps or more to freeze impact.
With that, a well-shot 2D video answers almost every question the amateur golfer has: am I coming over the top?, am I hanging back on my trail side?, is my tempo too quick?
When 3D really matters
3D wins when the question is about sequencing and internal magnitudes the eye can't see: separation between hips and torso, transition timing, loading. That's the territory of biomechanical fitting and players who've already cleaned up the visible stuff. For everyone else, it adds detail you won't know how to turn into better shots.
