Do Swing Analysis Apps Actually Work? What They Really Measure and What They Don't

Quick answer: Yes, they work, but with clear limits. A camera app measures well what it can see: body angles, positions, swing plane and tempo. It doesn't measure what actually determines ball flight—club face speed, path and angle of attack at impact—because that happens in thousandths of a second and needs a radar like TrackMan.

Phone camera vs. radar: two different things

You have to separate two worlds. A camera records your body and the club at a certain frame rate: it's good for seeing posture, swing plane, sequence and tempo. A radar (or impact sensor) measures the physics of the ball and the clubface at the moment of impact.

According to TrackMan's ball flight laws, what determines where and how the ball flies is the combination of clubhead speed, face angle, path and angle of attack at impact. All of that happens in thousandths of a second. An ordinary phone camera doesn't have enough frames to measure it accurately.

What a camera app DOES measure well

And Harvey Penick already warned against drowning the player in technicalities. A camera that shows you your tempo and sequence gives you actionable information without overwhelming you.

How to use them well

Use the camera for what it sees: posture, plane, sequence and tempo. Use a radar (at your shop or academy) when you want to understand why the ball is doing what it's doing. They're complementary, not rivals. The trap is asking one to do the other's job.

Can a phone app measure my clubhead speed?

Not with real accuracy. Clubhead speed and ball speed are measured with radar or dedicated sensors. An app can estimate tendencies from video, but it won't give you the reliable number a TrackMan does. If you see that figure in a camera-only app, treat it as a ballpark estimate.

Can tempo be measured well with just video?

So what's the point of filming my swing?
