Where the error comes from: the camera doesn't see everything
The most common failure isn't the AI's "brain"—it's what you feed it. A phone camera captures the geometry of your body and the club, frame by frame. What it does not capture directly is what a Doppler radar measures: ball speed, actual spin, and exact launch angle. That difference is key according to TrackMan's ball flight laws, where the ball's initial direction depends mostly on the clubface orientation at impact (on the order of 85% on drives, per their radar measurements).
Translation: if a camera-based app hands you an "exact" spin number, be skeptical. It can estimate it from the mechanics, but it isn't measuring it the way a radar does. What a camera can reliably measure
There are parameters a camera captures very well because they're purely kinematic. Tempo is the best example. John Novosel, timing hundreds of pro swings on video, found a backswing-to-downswing ratio of 3:1 that was surprisingly consistent (Tour Tempo). That's exactly what a camera measures well: it counts frames between the takeaway, the top, and impact. If your app tells you your tempo ratio, that number rests on solid ground.
A practical rule for deciding whether to trust it: if the analysis leans on geometry and time (planes, angles, sequence, tempo ratio), you're on firm footing. If it leans on ball physics (spin, exact carry) without a ball-tracking sensor, it's an estimate.
The best error detector: ball flight
Here's the acid test, and it isn't technological. Adam Young insists that the most honest feedback that exists is what the ball does: it doesn't lie. If the AI tells you your face is open but your ball starts straight with a small draw, something doesn't add up—either the recording angle is deceiving it, or the impact frame is being detected wrong.
Check your capture conditions, too, before you argue with the number:
- Enough steady light (no backlighting or shadows slicing across the body).
- Correct angle: true face-on or down-the-line, camera at the recommended height, not tilted.
- Full body in frame, including club and ball.
- High frame rate: at a low frame rate, impact (which lasts milliseconds) gets lost between frames.
If those four fail, any AI—ours included—will give you noise, not signal. TPI, in its assessment approach, starts from the same idea: first you measure correctly under the right conditions, then you interpret. Without the first, the second is worthless.
How to use AI without it leading you astray
Treat it as a second pair of eyes, not an infallible judge. Always cross-check three things: what the AI says, what your ball does, and what you feel. When all three agree, act. When the AI clashes head-on with a clear, repeated ball flight, doubt the number before you doubt your shot. And if a pattern repeats across 20 well-recorded swings, it's no longer noise: it's your tendency.
