AI Golf App vs Golf Simulator: What Each One Measures and Which Do I Need?
Two different questions: what the ball does vs why
A golf simulator and an AI golf app don't measure the same thing, so they aren't competitors: they answer different questions.
A simulator (radar like TrackMan, or high-speed cameras trained on the ball) measures the outcome: ball speed, spin, launch angle, angle of attack, path and face. From that it predicts the ball flight. According to TrackMan's ball flight laws, the starting direction is governed mostly by the clubface and the curve by the face-to-path relationship. The simulator tells you what the ball does.
An AI app (like Birdia) records your swing with your phone camera and analyzes your body and the club: takeaway, backswing, downswing, finish, tempo, planes, balance. It doesn't measure spin or real distance. It tells you why that ball flight happens.
What each one actually measures
- Radar/simulator: ball and impact data (spin, speed, path, face). Excellent for dispersion and distance gapping. Expensive and usually fixed in a facility or at home.
- Camera + AI: kinematics of the body and the swing. It flags sequencing faults, a rushed tempo, early extension or loss of balance. It fits in your pocket and works on the range.
The camera can't see spin and the radar can't see your spine. Expecting one to do the other's job is the source of most buyer's remorse.

Frequently asked questions
Can an AI golf app give me the carry distance for each club?
Not with radar accuracy. Without spin and ball speed data, no camera-only app can reliably measure real distance. For distance gapping you need a launch monitor. The app is for diagnosing the motion, not for measuring the flight.
Will the simulator tell me what I'm doing wrong in my swing?
It gives you indirect clues (path, face, angle of attack), but it can't see your body. You'll know you're coming over the top from the path, but not whether it's coming from your shoulder or your hip. That's where the AI camera pinpoints the cause.
Can I use both at the same time?
Yes, that's the ideal setup. Record your swing with the app while you hit into the simulator: the radar confirms the ball result and the app explains the motion that produced it. Combining the what and the why is the most efficient way to practice.
